What to Do in Amalfi Coast (2026 Guide by a Local Lemon Farmer)

If you’re planning a trip to the Amalfi Coast, you’re probably wondering what to do beyond the typical tourist spots. As a seventh-generation lemon farmer born and raised in Amalfi, I’ve seen thousands of visitors fall in love with this land—but also miss its most authentic side. This guide is written by a local, to help you experience Amalfi beyond the typical tourist routes.

Don’t Stop in the Main Square

Most visitors arrive in Amalfi and stop in the main square, right in front of the cathedral. It’s iconic, yes—but also crowded, noisy, and far from the real character of the town. If you want to truly experience Amalfi, the best advice is simple: Visit the Duomo… and then leave the square.

Within just a few minutes, everything changes. Move into the small alleys behind the cathedral and you’ll find a completely different atmosphere—quieter, more authentic, where daily life still feels real.

One of the most fascinating areas to explore is the Rione Vagliendola, one of the oldest districts of Amalfi. Here, narrow stairways and hidden passages take you away from the crowds and into a part of the town that still preserves its original identity. From here, you can follow a beautiful and lesser-known route that leads toward the upper part of Amalfi, in the direction of the old Capuchin monastery—today home to the Anantara hotel.

Along the way, you’ll pass through quiet residential areas, panoramic stairways, and the Passeggiata Longfellow, a peaceful path overlooking the town and the sea. It’s a completely different Amalfi compared to the busy waterfront. This side of Amalfi is perfect if you’re looking for silence, views, and authenticity.

To explore a completely different perspective, head to the opposite side of the town, towards Atrani. Here you’ll find another hidden gem: the Monumental Cemetery of Amalfi, which can also be reached via a public elevator. From this point, the view opens up over both Amalfi and Atrani, offering one of the most unique panoramas on the coast. It’s a place few tourists visit, yet deeply connected to the history and identity of the local community.

Exploring both sides of Amalfi allows you to truly understand how the town is built—between sea, steep slopes, and centuries of history.

Visit a Hidden Lemon Garden Above Amalfi

Just below the Monumental Cemetery, on one of the highest terraces overlooking Amalfi, lies a place that very few visitors ever find. This is where you’ll discover a different side of the coast—not from the busy streets, but from above, surrounded by silence, history, and nature.

Here, among dry stone walls built centuries ago, grows the sfusato amalfitano lemon, the variety that has shaped the landscape and identity of this region for generations. These terraces are not just agricultural land—they are the result of centuries of work, carved by hand into the mountain to make cultivation possible in an extreme environment.

In our family garden, cared for by the Aceto family for seven generations, we welcome visitors to experience this world as it truly is.

This is not a tour created for tourists.
It’s part of our daily life.

You don’t just walk through lemon trees—you begin to understand:

  • how cultivation happens on vertical terraces
  • why traditional pergolas are still used
  • what it really means to maintain this landscape over time

During the visit, there is also a moment to slow down and enjoy simple, authentic flavors: fresh lemonade, homemade lemon cake, and traditional limoncello. And for those who wish to take their time, there is also the possibility to stay a little longer and enjoy a drink overlooking Amalfi, in a peaceful setting far from the crowds. From here, Amalfi looks completely different—quieter, deeper, more real.

If you’re looking for an experience that goes beyond the surface, this is where you’ll find it—just above Amalfi, in a place most visitors never reach.

Go Beyond Amalfi — Explore Nature and Real Local Experiences

While Amalfi itself is beautiful, some of the most memorable experiences are just outside the main town. If you enjoy nature and want to escape the crowds, the Valle delle Ferriere is one of the best hidden gems in the area. This lush valley, with waterfalls and rare plants, feels completely different from the coastal landscape and offers a refreshing break from the heat and the busy streets.

There are also many scenic paths connecting Amalfi to nearby villages like Atrani, Ravello, and Scala—routes that have been used for centuries and still offer some of the most authentic views of the coast. If you really want to understand this territory, walking it is essential.

A Small Local Tip

When you’re in Amalfi, you’ll probably come across the famous lemon sorbet served inside a giant lemon. It looks great in photos—but in most cases, it’s more about appearance than quality, and often overpriced.

If you want a more authentic experience, keep it simple:

  • try a good lemon gelato from a local gelateria
  • or just buy a real Amalfi lemon and enjoy its scent and freshness

Sometimes, the simplest things are the most genuine.

See the Coast from the Sea

If you’re planning to spend time at the beach, there’s one thing most visitors don’t realize.

The main beaches in Amalfi can get very crowded, especially in peak season. A much better option is to move away from the central beach and reach one of the smaller beach clubs located along the coast. Many of these lidi are only accessible by sea and organize their own boat transfers directly from Amalfi. From the harbor area (darsena), small boats will take you to hidden coves and quieter spots that you simply can’t reach on foot.

Once there, you’ll find a completely different atmosphere—clearer water, fewer people, and a much more relaxed experience. You don’t need anything complicated: just choose a beach club, arrange the transfer, and let the boat take you there.

This is one of the best ways to enjoy the Amalfi Coast, and how many locals prefer to experience the sea.

Final Thoughts

Amalfi is one of the most beautiful places in the world—but like many famous destinations, it can also be experienced in very different ways. You can stay in the crowded streets, follow the same paths as everyone else, and see only the surface.

Or you can slow down, explore beyond the obvious, and discover the deeper side of this land—its history, its traditions, and the people who still live and work here.

Experience Amalfi from Above

By now, you’ve probably realized that the real Amalfi is not in the crowded streets—but in the places just above them. If you’d like to experience this side of the coast firsthand, you’re welcome to visit our family lemon garden.

It’s not just a tour, but a way to step into a different rhythm—where everything slows down, and Amalfi reveals its more authentic side.
